Causal Analysis of urban Trails and Cardiovascular Health

This project seeks to expand an analysis conducted by members of our team in Winnipeg, Manitoba which investigated the health effect of a large investment in urban active transportation infrastructure. We will extend this natural experiment to include all trails built within the same time period across five Canadian cities (Edmonton AB, Winnipeg MB, Mississauga ON, Quebec City QC, and Sherbrooke QC).

By linking geo-spatial mapping data in each city with provincial administrative health data, our goal is to determine if people living in neighbourhoods which had a trail built experienced different cardiometabolic health outcomes compared to people living in neighbourhoods which did not have a trail built. We are also interested in understanding the equity of any potential health effects, and how different people may experience different levels of access to or benefits from these trails.
